Xylitol is an alcohol found in most plant material. IT is commonly used as a sugar substitute and in many “sugar free” feeds. Xylitol offers several oral health benefits. Not only has it been shown to help reduce dental cavities, it also helps increase saliva flow. This increase in saliva helps by making the environment in the mouth less acidic. Bacteria that cause cavities thrive in an acidic environment. By raising the pH in the mouth, we are able to reduce the number of cavity causing bacteria. Perhaps one of the biggest benefits of daily xylitol consumption is the prevention and reduction of early childhood cavities. Studies have shown that newly erupting teeth benefit the most from xylitol exposure.
Correct Dosage amounts are very important when consuming xylitol. Number of doses throughout the day is more important than quantity of the doses. Five doses daily of xylitol are needed in order to get the full benefits. Xylitol is available in many forms including gum, hard candies, suckers and gummy candy. When choosing a product containing xylitol it is important that xylitol is listed as the first ingredient in order to ensure there is the proper amount needed to help reduce cavities. Ideal times for xylitol consumption are; first thing in the morning, after each meal, and right before bed. The next time you’re in the office be sure to grab a sugar free sucker sweetened with xylitol!
